Which is the true history of WWII: Zinn or the Patriots?

Between Howard Zinns work and the Patriots work, I believe the more accurate one is Howard Zinn. The patriots portray America as the best country with no flaws. They let the corruption and other flaws of America slide because we are suppose to maintain this perfect look of America. With Howard Zinn, he tells everything from the side of the people. Since they didn’t have a voice, Zinn decided to take that into his own hands. He tells his readers of the struggles of the people and what they wanted from the government, the president, and so forth. That makes Zinn more accurate because he is doing something that not many historians do. He gives us a different way to look at history. After reading these two competing histories, I’ve learned that history can be told in different ways or even viewed in different ways. Some people believe that America is the all mighty while others think that it sucks. It just shows different perspectives people see.

Blog Post 10: Howard Zinn

Howard Zinns work raises issues about the purpose and significance of studying history because he actually tells us about the situations. He not only gives us the information, facts, and dates, he gives us the feelings of the people. He compares past events to present events like when he talked about the holocaust being almost no different then slavery. He gives his opinions within his writing too, like when he says that America isn’t all about freedom like they say. The benefits to this method is that the people who read his work can actually understand what was happening during the event. He also explains his side so well that it’s a clear picture for the audience to see. The drawbacks to this method is that most historians aren’t seen as people who explicitly tell what they believe, and Zinn does. That might cause some people to not want to read his books. I believe he is right about America during word war II and the Cold War. We didn’t do anything to help the people outside our nation. We also were no different then those nations because we allowed imperialism and racism to still happen from past to present.

American Isolation leading to WWII

During the 1920′s and 1930s, America had chosen an isolationist government. We were still paying the costs for previous wars and didn’t have time nor the money to get involved with another one. If they kept a distance from the works then they’d be okay! They were still trying to get better from the great depression and trying to make America better! This led to the involvement of ww2 however because even though we tried to stay out, our allies (Britain) was running out of supply and weapons. Of course America helped and it showed they were helping in the war.

The economic policies of the federal government starting in 1921-1929 were responsible for the depressions of 1930. The prohibition was the start to all of this. Their biggest source of money was alcohol and since it was no longer legal, they lost all incomes. Later on in years, people started playing in stocks, even banks. They spent money thinking that the stocks would make them more money and enough for them to keep for themselves. But on Black Tuesday the markets crashed and made banks lose money which on turn made people lose money. All these economic policies made Americans feel lonely and they began to fight for themselves. They tried but it didn’t work so they had to suffer through the depression until things got better. The economic policies of the federal government starting in 1921-1929 were responsible for the depressions of 1930. The interview with Daniel Okrent was of course a great experience. I think that meeting the author and discussing their book with them is helpful to any student. He gave great insight on our prompt and helped us understand what we were reading. To answer my questions he mentioned how the Congress didn’t really want to stop canada from bringing in alcohol. The border, especially around the Great Lakes, was too great to control and stop all transportation of liquor. To answer my second question, he stated that men were surprised and shocked that women were speaking up against them. I learned that there was more than one cause to why Prohibition failed.

A Nation of Drunkards??

Alcohol was a major part of American life before the Prohibition started. On page 7 of Last Call, Daniel Okrent says that “the national taste for alcohol (or–a safer bet– for the effects of alcohol) dated back to the Puritans..” Alcohol, however, began to become a major problems in homes. Men started to come home and abuse their families and they’d even not go to work. This led to the Temperance movement which was set up by former alcoholics who pledged to never drink again. Some of these people fell through on their word and went to secret places to get their alcohol. This led to the ratification of the eighteenth amendment which made the transportation and sale of all alcohol illegal. The main pushers of getting alcohol out of America were women because they got the most repercussions. They protested and got groups together to get alcohol out. Overall, the prohibition and temperance movement gave women plenty of rights but never fully got alcohol, of the evil, out of the land.
